Transportation System Management and Operations (TSMO) is an innovative, multimodal, and cost-effective approach to managing a city’s transportation system.
Design Objective: Translate an equity-driven regional TSMO strategy into clear, accessible visuals that support long-term transportation decision making in the Portland Metro Region.
In collaboration with Oregon Metro, my team developed a regional TSMO strategy rooted in equity, addressing past disparities and reducing burdens experienced by BIPOC communities and people with low incomes.
My role focused on shaping how this strategy is understood. I translated complex policy and planning frameworks into visuals that clarify priorities, guide decision making, and make the strategy more accessible to a broad audience. The project was recognized by the National Center for Operational Excellence for its contributions to equity in TSMO. View the full strategy here.
The first major milestone over the year-long project was the creation of the Equity Tree, an assessment tool that guides TSMO decision making in the region for years to come:
The project logo was designed to symbolize a route that ends at a single point: the destination we that will bring us all together.
Icons were designed to represent the six equity goals that will move the region towards providing safe travel, allowing access for all travelers, and reflecting the needs of all voices. As part of the cohesive visual design language, these icons were used throughout the document.
I likened the TSMO journey to the quest of a hero’s tale. This metaphor evolved to become a visual map that became the strategy’s table of contents and depicts the journey towards TSMO success.
